Shoutout to the old hand in Gary who told me to stop wire wheeling my tube ends
I was rolling tubes at a shop in Gary two weeks ago and an old timer named Dale watched me wire wheel every tube end before I put it in. He said "you're polishing off the tooth the roller needs," and told me to just wipe them down with a rag unless there's rust. I tried it on the next 40 tubes and my roller marks came out way more even, no galling. Nobody ever told me that in my first apprenticeship. What do you all do with your tube ends before rolling?
Interesting that Dale said tooth specifically, because I've heard old timers call it bite instead and I never got a clear answer on what the wire wheel actually takes off that matters. Did you notice any difference in how the tubes fed into the rolls, or was it only the marks that changed? I've got a batch of 2 inch mechanical coming up and I'd like to know before I change anything.
