I thought face shields were overkill for grinding until a spark caught my cheek.

NOW I won't touch a grinder without one, no matter how quick the job.

Reading your line about not touching a grinder without a shield, I see it differently. For a five second grind, strapping on a full face shield is over the top. Good safety glasses stop sparks just fine and don't block your view. That plastic shield gets hot, fogs up, and just gets in the way when you need to see details. Most of us learn to angle the tool and keep our face out of the line of fire. Calling it a must for every single job turns a simple tool into a big production.

My friend's auto shop requires face shields for every grinder use after a coworker got facial burns. Those quick jobs are exactly when you let your guard down and accidents happen. Safety glasses are good, but they don't stop hot metal from hitting your forehead or cheeks. A little fog is better than scars that don't heal.

A five-second mistake leaves a permanent reminder.
