Appreciation post: the retired farrier who corrected my hammer grip at a county fair demo

Two summers ago at the Lane County fair, this older guy watched me forge a leaf for about five minutes. He walked over and said, "You're holding that hammer like a shovel, son," then showed me how to choke up on the handle for better control. I brushed it off at first, but after trying his way for a week my wrists stopped aching and my hits got way cleaner. Anyone else get a tip from a stranger that completely changed their setup?

You ever get one of those random corrections that sticks with you for way longer than it should? For me it was a bread baker at a farmers market who told me my dough was too wet, so I tried it his way and suddenly my loaves actually rose instead of turning into flat sad discs. He was just some guy selling sourdough next to the honey stand, but I think about his advice every time I mix flour now. Funny how a total stranger can see the thing you've been missing for months.
