Clipper guards are not all the same size and nobody believes me about the numbers
I keep hearing guys in shops around here talk about guard sizes like a #2 is a #2 no matter what brand is on the blade, and that is just flat out wrong. I run a Wahl Magic Clip at my chair in Boise and the metal guards on that thing cut way shorter than the plastic ones that come in the box, maybe a 1/16 inch difference, and on a fade that is the whole ballgame. Had a regular come in asking for a #3 all over and when I ran it he said it looked closer to a 2, and I had to show him the two guards side by side so he would get it. Stood in front of my mirror for 20 minutes one night with a set of digital calipers measuring every guard I own and the spread between brands is wild, some were a full 1/8 inch off from each other. So when a new guy starts and asks me what guard to use for a taper, I don't give him a number anymore, I hand him the guard and make him cut a test patch on a mannequin head. How do you all explain this to clients without sounding like you're making excuses for a bad cut?
