PSA: a squirrel chewed a hole in my bird feeder pole and 6 finches got a free buffet
So I hung a new tube feeder on a shepherd hook pole about a month ago in my yard here in Lansing, and it was working great, goldfinches all day. Last Tuesday I looked out the kitchen window and the whole feeder was tilted at like a 45 degree angle. Turns out a squirrel had chewed most of the way through the plastic coating on the pole and then bent it right where it was weak. The tube feeder dropped onto the grass and the port covers popped off, so seed poured out everywhere. I sat there for maybe 20 minutes watching house finches and one very fat grackle clean up the mess like it was a pizza party. I'm not even mad at the squirrel honestly, I just want to know how to stop this from happening again. Has anyone had luck with a baffle on the pole itself, or do I just need to go all metal? Also open to hearing if this is a lost cause and I should hang feeders from a tree branch instead.
