Unpopular opinion: my 9 mile day in Shenandoah beat every big mile day I have done
Last Saturday I hiked a slow 9 miles on the Appalachian Trail through Shenandoah and it was the best day I have had on a trail in a year. I left the car at Beagle Gap around 7am, took the side trail to the summit of Hightop Mountain, and just sat there for 40 minutes eating a sad peanut butter bagel. Normally I push for 15 or 16 miles and rush every view to make camp by dark. This time I got to camp with daylight left, soaked my feet in the creek, and slept like a rock. Has anyone else cut their daily mileage way down and liked it more, or do you feel like you are wasting the trip?
Did your friend ever try just sitting at one spot for like two hours? My buddy did that last month on a trip out west, planned a 14 mile day but stopped at this little lake around mile 5 and just... stayed. Made coffee, watched the light change, skipped rocks for way too long. He said it felt weird at first, like he was wasting daylight, but by the end it was the only day of the whole trip he actually remembered in detail. The rest just blurred into miles and snack breaks. Idk, maybe the slow days are the ones that stick.
