Tried GPS route planning for the first time in Colorado, maps beat it

Did a 3 day loop near Durango last month and used my phone GPS instead of the paper maps I always carry. Battery died on day 2 and I was totally lost for 4 hours until a couple with an old topo map showed me the way. Has anyone else ditched digital for paper after a close call like that?
