Spent 3 hours looking for a trail marker that was 10 feet away

On the Ozark Highlands Trail last month, I walked a half mile past a junction because the sign was hidden behind a fallen branch. Took me 45 minutes of backtracking with my map to figure out I'd been standing right next to it the whole time. Has anyone else had a marker just vanish like that, or was I just having a bad day?
