Remember when we used to time timing belts by feel? man i dont miss that

Back in 2010 I was working at this shop near Denver and my old mentor could set a timing belt by spinning the crank and listening. Dude never used a light or a gauge, just feel and experience. Took him maybe 4 tries on a new engine, but he got it right every time after that. Now with my cheap digital timing light from Harbor Freight I get it dialed in under 2 minutes, no guessing. The funny part is I still double check by hand because I dont fully trust the tool. Has anyone else kept those old habits even after getting better equipment, or am I just stuck in the past?

Ha! Do you trust your ears more than the light too, or just your hands?
