Tried a stud welder on a plastic bumper, big mistake

I picked up a cheap stud welder last month to try pulling a dent on a 2018 Civic bumper cover, thinking it would work on the ABS plastic like it does on steel. The welder just melted through the panel and left a 2-inch hole that I then had to spend 40 minutes filling with plastic repair compound. Has anyone else had luck with a specific plastic welding kit or should I just stick to heat guns and plungers for this kind of repair?
