Was sure the guy at the Grand Rapids star party was wrong about my focus, he was not
I got my first real telescope in March, a 6 inch dob I found for $180 on a local listing. At my third star party in Grand Rapids last month, an older guy looked at my Andromeda shot and said my focus was off by just a hair, and I almost ignored him because I had already spent 40 minutes nailing it. He pulled up his own laptop and showed me the same galaxy with pinpoint stars, then walked me through using a Bahtinov mask I did not even know existed. I tried one the next clear night and the difference was night and day on my star shapes. Now I want to know, how many of you actually use a mask on every session or only for the really tight shots? And did anyone else blow off good advice at a star party before finally trying it?
