PSA: I laughed at a guy's "ancient hammer" find for 2 years, then a museum in Ohio proved me wrong
A buddy dug up a chipped stone out of a creek bank near Chillicothe back in 2022 and swore it was a real tool while I kept calling it a weirdly shaped rock, mostly to mess with him. He mailed it to a state archaeologist who wrote back that it was a nutting stone used for cracking hickory nuts, maybe 2,000 to 3,000 years old, and I had to eat my words at a cookout in front of everybody. Has anybody here been totally wrong about a find like that, and how do you tell a real tool from a rock without sending it off somewhere?
