I used to roll my eyes at the Piltdown Man thing until I saw the actual forgeries at the Natural History Museum in London last spring.

Seeing the filed-down teeth and fake jawbone up close made me realize how easy it is to fool experts when everyone wants to believe the find is real, has anyone else been shocked by how sloppy the hoax actually was?

Wait, you actually got to see the Piltdown Man in person? I always thought it was just some dusty old bones in a textbook, but seeing the fake teeth and jaw must've been wild. Honestly, I used to think the whole thing was overblown, like people just got fooled by a clumsy prank and moved on. But after reading about it more, I realized how much it messed up real science for decades because everyone wanted it to be the missing link. The skull was so obviously doctored when you look at the details, it's kind of embarrassing that experts didn't catch it sooner. I guess it shows how much we can talk ourselves into believing something if it fits what we expect.

Heard a podcast where they talked about how the whole thing was almost like a mirror of what scientists wanted to believe at the time. Kinda makes you wonder how much of what we think is "fact" today might just be wishful thinking dressed up as data.
