Digging my own backyard in Ohio, and the 1840s trash pit I found isn't what I expected
Tbh I always assumed the old dump on family land near Dayton was just farm junk, so last spring I dug a test pit 50cm down expecting rusty nails and old fence wire. Instead I pulled out 14 pieces of blue transferware china and a clay pipe stem, which told me this was a real household dump from the 1840s, not random trash. I learned that the stratigraphy matters way more than the objects, since the glass layer sat above the ceramics and flipped my timeline. Has anyone else had a backyard pit completely rewrite what they thought about a property's history?
