Vent: That homeowner who watched too many YouTube videos
Had a consult yesterday with a guy who wanted me to top his 30 year old oak tree. Said he saw it done on a channel and it worked fine. I tried explaining how topping ruins the structure and opens it up to rot, but he just kept quoting the video. Finally I told him I wouldn't do it and left. Anyone else get clients who think internet advice beats 20 years of on the ground experience?

@lee_reed is right about those shoots snapping off, but trees don't really compartmentalize from topping cuts the same way.

Oh man, have you ever noticed how those YouTube videos never show the tree five years later? That oak is going to be a mess with all those stub cuts, sending out weak shoots that'll just break off in a storm. You did the right thing walking away. Sometimes the best job you can do is the one you refuse to do.
