Climbing spikes on trims versus a pole saw, and I'll say it: spikes win every time
Did a trim job on a row of silver maples in Rochester last month and my ground guy pushed hard for the pole saw to save time. By the third tree I had nicked two limbs with the pole head and spent 20 minutes cleaning up cuts I should have made clean the first time. Spikes let me get right up on the collar and read the branch angle, and I finished the back half of that row in 40 minutes. A pole saw is fine for light stuff near the chippers but for real structural cuts I'm not going back. Has anyone found a pole saw head that actually holds an angle on a heavy limb, or am I just bad with the thing?
