I ranked every Ghibli movie in a notebook back in 2016, now I just watch them
Back in 2016 I kept a spiral notebook with all 22 Ghibli films scored out of 10, and I'd argue with people online about my list for hours. Last week I watched My Neighbor Totoro with my niece and didn't think about ranking it once, just let the thing wash over me. Somewhere around 2020 I got tired of defending Spirited Away at number 1 like it was my job. Turns out I was treating anime like a spreadsheet instead of something I actually enjoy. Curious if anyone else went through a phase where they had to rank and rate everything before they could just watch it.
Ranking things is how you actually learn what you love, not some bad habit to shake off. If you never stop to ask why Totoro beats Howl's or where Grave of the Fireflies really lands, you are just letting pretty pictures float by without any real opinion. A list is not a cage, it is a record of how your taste changed, and tossing it out means you lose the proof you ever grew.
