Saved a roll of Tri-X with a $3 black sock trick

I was out in Seattle shooting street stuff and the light meter on my Canonet died mid-roll. I wrapped a black sock over the lens and set everything to 1/125 at f/8, then just guessed focus by stepping off distances. Every single frame came out perfectly exposed, which honestly shocked me. Has anyone else used a dumb household item to keep shooting when gear acts up?

My uncle used a folded up dollar bill to shim the battery door on his old Pentax for like five years. It’s funny how the best fixes are usually the dumbest ones. That sock trick reminds me of how people used to jam tin foil under car fuses when they blew, just to get home. When gear breaks, your brain suddenly gets real creative with what’s in your pocket.
