My worst week in the shop started with a single drop of water
I was finishing a walnut table top in my garage, and a tiny leak from the ceiling landed right on the fresh oil finish. It left a huge cloudy spot. I spent three full days trying to sand it out and reapply the finish, but the grain just would not match up again. Everyone says oil finishes are forgiving, but that one mistake cost me the whole project. Has anyone else had a finish get totally ruined by something small like that?

Oh man, that "single drop of water" thing is so real... a buddy of mine had a similar nightmare. He finally finished this beautiful cherry cabinet and a single fly landed in the wet lacquer. He tried to pick it out but just made a huge messed-up smear. The whole repair process just made it look worse and worse until he had to strip the whole door back to bare wood. It was heartbreaking to watch.

That's brutal. Did your buddy ever figure out a good way to fix a small bug in finish without making it worse? Seems like a common disaster. Some people say let it dry completely and sand it out, but that can leave a dip. Others swear by using a razor blade. Always wonder what the real pro move is for that.

Man, that's the worst. I used to think oil was foolproof too until a similar mess made me switch to wiping varnish for anything that might get wet. @the_anthony, your buddy's bug story is exactly why I'm so paranoid now.
